KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Thomas Jefferson Elementary School has been recognized by Solution Tree as a Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Work® School for sustained success in raising student achievement. The successful implementation of the PLC at Work® process was a major contributing factor in the improved achievement of its students. Jefferson Elementary School is one of approximately 600 schools and districts across the U.S. and Canada to receive this honor - and one of just twelve in Tennessee. Notably, Kingsport City Schools earned two of those twelve recognitions: Jefferson Elementary and Adams Elementary.
"Congratulations to the Jefferson school community for being named a Model PLC school by Solution-Tree organization," said Dr. Chis Hampton, Kingsport City Schools Superintendent. "This recognition is a powerful affirmation of what happens when educators work together with purpose and passion. The team at Jefferson has created a culture where collaboration drives results and students are at the center of every decision. Being recognized as a Model PLC school is not just an award or recognition - it is a testament to a culture of excellence."
"We are proud to be recognized as a Model PLC at Work School - an honor that reflects the collective commitment of our staff to ensuring high levels of learning for every student," said Dr. Stephanie Potter, Jefferson Elementary School Principal. "The designation is the result of a shared focus on collaboration, continuous improvement, and a deep belief that all students can succeed. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the leadership and diligence of our guiding coalition, whose vision, persistence, and attention to PLC processes have helped build a culture centered on learning, collective responsibility, and results. We remain committed to building on this success as we continue to serve our students and community with excellence."
PLCs are schools and districts in which educators recognize the key to improved learning for students is on-going, job-embedded learning for the adults serving those students. PLCs call upon educators to:
- Focus on learning.
- Build a collaborative culture.
- Create a results orientation.
Schools are recognized based on strict criteria, including demonstration of a commitment to the above PLC concepts, implementation of these concepts for at least three years, and clear evidence of improved student learning over that period. Once measurable results can be seen, the school must submit an application explaining its practices, structures, and culture for consideration by the PLC Review Committee.
Schools and districts selected for this recognition have shown a sustained commitment to helping all of their students achieve at high levels and have been willing to alter the structure and culture of the organization to reflect their commitment.
For more than 25 years, Solution Tree resources have helped K–12 teachers and administrators create schools where all children succeed.
